Roof maintenance can be challenging because it is a lot of work and does cost quite a bit. There are different types of roofs, and you have to work with professional roofers to get your roof fixed in case of any issues. When dealing with a roof, there are other issues like repairing it at the right time and making sure that you have the proper safety equipment to fix the roof.

Some businesses and companies have been performing roof maintenance & repairs for a long time and would be the most informed about the process. If you try to go up and fix the roof yourself, and you are not specific about the work you have to handle, you might cause more issues instead of fixing anything. Additionally, repairing roofs is not as simple as tiles, sometimes they might require some technical knowledge if there are solar panels, and various additions made to the roof.

Throughout running our business, we learned that many people might have to wait a long time to find a team to check out the issues with the roof. There are instances where the house might not have significant issues, and the people living there can fix the problem. We created a list of simple roof maintenance tips to assist people with looking after their roofs. We reduced the work that roof fixers had to do through inspections because we learned that people could go through these issues and understand whether they needed someone to fix their roof or could do it themselves.

Tip #1: Do a visible roof inspection periodically yourself from the ground
Take a step back from your house so you can see the majority of the roof in your view (binoculars help too). Sometimes you can spot damage to your roof from the ground yourself. Some things to keep an eye out for include: missing/curled/cracked shingles, missing granules on shingles, or damaged flashing. Not everyone is fortunate to handle a roof shot, but there are times and angles from where people would see the house roof. Consider getting as much of a view to see if there are any evident issues with the roof.

Tip #2: Do an interior inspection as well
Sometimes you might see visible signs of leaking from your roof by looking at your ceilings or checking in the attic. Check for water spots, mildew/mold, or any light shining through potential holes in your roof. The unfortunate part about the roof is that you would only notice the leaks in the rains. Otherwise, you would have to check through stains and marks. These might get tricky to spot if the house was painted.

Tip #3: Clean out your gutters twice a year
This step is very important in roof maintenance for maintaining a healthy roof for years to come. It can be a messy job, but it’s worth it and can save you from larger costs later on. Clogged gutters cause water to get trapped. They have nowhere to go except the wood supporting your roof, which can lead to moisture and potential leaks in your house. Furthermore, there are teams that people can work with who would be in the position to clean up the gutters. They usually bring their equipment which makes the process easier.

Tip #4: Get a professional roof inspection
Sometimes you might miss potential problems that a professional eye is trained to see. They will also give you a better understanding of the current condition of your roof and provide you with tips and solutions to your current roofing needs. It never hurts to get a professional opinion, and most of the time it’s FREE. If you are working on a larger project with a roof inspector, they are open to one or two consultations at no cost. However, you should work with someone who knows what they are doing and not someone without any experience.

Tip #5: Get your roof repaired or replaced if needed as soon as possible
If you need a roof repair or replacement just do it. It’s better to address the issue as soon as possible. The longer you leave it, the more you will pay later on for it. Additionally, it might be challenging to get up on the roof if it just rained because it can be slippery. Even wearing a harness could be tricky, so waiting for the sun to come out might be wise. There are other challenges like not detecting leaks unless it rains and the water gets in, so it might make more sense to occasionally get the roof checked out so that everything is fine.
